UPCOMING SPEAKERS
July 6 – 12:15 pm
Meeting at Agnes Scott College
Susan Kidd, Director of Sustainability

Meeting at Agnes Scott College July 6 at 12:15 pm

Meet in the Fireplace Lounge, just inside the Alston Student Center next to the chapel.

Setting Goals with Moving Targets:

Behind the Scenes with Agnes Scott College’s Sustainability Program

We see lots of reports in the media on sustainability, and related subjects such as offshore drilling and coal mining. And increasingly we see lots of ads for “green” products and services. Where can you find detailed information on this ever-changing movement? How can you assess the advertising claims?

Join Susan Kidd, the Director of Sustainability at Agnes Scott College, as she tells us about the college’s beginning steps along a path to sustainability, and as she reflects on how the college’s experience might help your efforts in environmental sustainability as individuals and as business people.

Susan Constantine will lead a short campus tour following the program. For more information go to: www.agnesscott.edu

SPEAKER INFORMATION
If you are bringing a speaker to Rotary, please send me some credentials or their place of employment so I can include that information in the Messenger.

Grady High School
Summer Literacy Enhancement Program

Midtown Rotarians are invited to volunteer with this year’s Grady High School Summer Literacy Enhancement Program. This year the students will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every week day from Monday, June 7 through Friday, July 2. (The last two days will include a trip to Sapelo Island off the Georgia coast.)

Each day from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, students will work on their reading and vocabulary skills. That’s when they need tutors to work with them one-on-one. From noon until 2:00 p.m., they eat lunch and do outside exercises that focus on teamwork and relationship building. They don’t need us then.

Jacob Hackett, the Grady faculty person who designed and continues to coordinate the program, has scheduled a volunteer training day for Wednesday, June 2, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., at Grady High School. If you have questions, please contact Jerry Gardner.

CAREER NETWORKING RESOURCES
Rotary District 6900 is sponsoring career networking resources led by Sam Ainsworth, a member of the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro. For information, go to our district’s web site, www.rotarydistrict6900.org, and click on “Career Networking.” It is an opportunity for Rotarians who are looking for a job to network with Rotarians who might be hiring.

HAITI NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Thanks to Dave Zimmerman and Bryan Long for suggestions on how each of us can contribute to the people of Haiti. Suggestions include MedShare International, Rotary District 6900 Charitable Fund, and Pure Water for the World. If you would like a copy of their suggestions, your Messenger editor will be glad to send them to you (acestes@mindspring.com).

Ferst Foundation Receives Donation
On June 15, our meeting began with a moment for the literacy initiative of our Club.

Robin Ferst was on hand to receive a check from President Dave to continue our support of the Ferst Foundation.

Currently, the Foundation sends books to 37,000 children each month. We have raised $32,000 for their efforts. With 204 Rotary Clubs in Georgia, 106 are currently involved with the literacy initiative. The goal is for the remaining clubs to become involved.

Wayne Mock

Last week we heard Shannon Powell and Wayne Mock of the Midtown Alliance.

Ms. Powell discussed the programs offered by the Alliance such as the streetscapes initiative for the Peachtree/West Peachtree intersection, transportation options (including carpools, vanpools, zip cars, walking, bicycling, and employer benefits), and the Summer Lunch Box series at the Arts District Plaza (Wednesdays, May-July).

Wayne Mock focused on security and quality of life issues. Most visible is Midtown Blue, the 24/7 public safety force of off-duty police officers patrolling Midtown streets and sidewalks and augmenting Atlanta Police Department services in order to make Midtown safer.
