Weekly
Programs
The
academic, business, political, and professional
communities of Atlanta and Georgia and the activities
of the members of the club supply Midtown Atlanta
with a wealth of interesting programs and speakers,
such as Secretary of State Karen Handel, Atlanta
Mayor Shirley Franklin, Mindspring Founder Charles
Brewer, Dave Wilkinson, Atlanta Police Foundation,
Jim Breedlove, Fernbank Center, former Fire
Chief Kelvin Cochran, Atlanta Fire Department,
Ed Baker, Atlanta Business Chronicle and the
late Judge Sammie Jones, Juvenile Court.
The programs and the location of the Ansley Club make Midtown Atlanta popular for visitors. Rotarians from other clubs in Atlanta and Georgia and from as far a field as Africa, Australia, Europe and the Pacific Rim often attend our weekly luncheon meetings.
Annually, around Veterans Day we honor all our members who have served our country.
Periodically, Midtown Atlanta meetings are held at various cultural and educational locations with a soup and sandwich luncheon around the Midtown area. These are well-received because it creates an opportunity to visit interesting community highlights without taking extra time out of the week.
Special
Recognition Meetings
Every year we hold a special meeting to honor our STAR students and teachers with a breakfast. We select one student and teacher to send to the district level of academic competition. This also provides an opportunity for parents to be a part of their children’s honor.
Because
of the critical need to support our Atlanta
firefighters, we have held a fundraiser to provide
financial backing to help maintain Firehouse
#29. Also, we were a participant in their anniversary
celebration and have had some of their men as
our guests at our club.
Each
April we honor Midtown Atlanta volunteers who
have been recommended by their organizations
to be Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club’s Barbara
B. Rose Volunteer of the Year. Each volunteer
is a guest of the club for lunch and is given
a framed certificate for extraordinary efforts.
Some Ongoing
Projects
Locally,
we are focusing on Grady High School this year
with funding support and volunteer club members
working directly with the students to improve
their reading skills.
MARC
has had a long-standing relationship with the
Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti. To help
babies and young children who are suffering
from severe malnutrition, this year we have
purchased, Plumpy Nut, a nutrition supplement,
which is proven to return the youngsters to
better health.
Fellowship
Members of Midtown Atlanta participate in several outings together each year: In March newly elected officers and directors attend the District Assembly in Peachtree City to learn about their duties.
Last
year we held a pre-District Conference Round-Up
party for members and their guests. District Governor
Ted and his lovely wife, April, joined us for
a fun-filled evening.
In April members and families and guests attend the District 6900 annual conference to discuss the affairs of the district and enjoy meeting members from other Rotary clubs.
In June we have a summer picnic or dinner with spouses and guests.
In
October 2008 the club raised money for Literacy
projects with a fantastic golf tournament at East
Lake Golf Club that had a cause but was a joyous
fellowship event for all.
At
the beautiful Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta,
Midtown Atlanta members and their guests celebrated
the holiday season with a dinner dance with their
spouses and guests.
Organization
of Rotary
Rotary clubs around the world are associated through Rotary International and are administered from the headquarters of Rotary International in Evanston, Illinois.
Rotary clubs are associated in districts. Each district is headed by a district governor who, on election, becomes an officer of Rotary International. There are three Rotary districts in Georgia-6900, 6910, and 6920. This year the three Districts announced a partnership with the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy.
Rotary clubs are organized within a geographically defined community (city, municipal area or region). Each club has a president, a board of directors, and other officers according to the by-laws of the club.
Rotary Giving
Midtown
Atlanta Rotary Club members contribute to three
Rotary foundations- The Rotary Foundation (TRF),
Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP), and Midtown
Atlanta Rotary Foundation (MARF). TRF supports
Rotary projects worldwide including PolioPlus,
which is trying to stamp out polio globally. GRSP
brings international students to Georgia to study
for one year at our colleges so they can learn
about us and other students. MARF supports community
projects in the Midtown area
